Estate planning in Arnold

Arnold is the biggest town in Gedling borough and it has never felt like a suburb of anywhere. There is a real centre here — the Market Place, Front Street, the Bonington Theatre — and a strong local identity that goes back to the framework knitters and hosiery workshops that once filled these streets. Arnot Hill Park still has the mill pond at its heart, and from Killisick and Woodthorpe the land rises away towards Bestwood, Calverton and the edge of open country. The people we help in Arnold are, more often than not, long-settled homeowners: couples who bought in the sixties or seventies and have watched the town grow around them, widows and widowers sorting things out after a bereavement and realising quite how difficult it was made by the lack of paperwork, and adult children who have driven over from Mapperley or Redhill because Mum’s memory is not what it was and nobody has a Power of Attorney. That last conversation is one we have a great deal, and there is usually still time to fix it — but not indefinitely.

Why local families choose Lighthouse

You will get plain speaking, patience, and a price that does not move. We come to you anywhere in Arnold and the Gedling villages, at no charge, and we are happy to sit with an elderly parent at their own pace, with family present if that helps. Nothing is rushed and nothing is pushed. Everything is explained until you genuinely understand it, because a Will you do not understand is not much use to anybody — least of all the family who has to rely on it.

Areas we cover near Arnold: We cover Arnold, Daybrook, Redhill, Woodthorpe, Killisick, Bestwood Village, Calverton, Mapperley and the surrounding Gedling villages.

Arnold — your questions

Frequently asked

My dad is becoming forgetful — is it too late for a Lasting Power of Attorney?

Not necessarily, and it is well worth finding out quickly. An LPA can only be made while the person still understands what they are signing and what it does — forgetfulness on its own does not mean that has gone. We can visit your dad at home in Arnold, talk to him gently and at his pace, and form a proper view. If he still has capacity we can get it done. If capacity has already been lost, the only route left is a deputyship application to the Court of Protection, which takes many months and costs a great deal more, so please do not put it off.

My husband died without a Will — what happens now, and what should I do about my own?

We are sorry. Where there is no Will, the intestacy rules decide who inherits, and for a married couple the surviving spouse usually receives the first slice of the estate with the rest split with the children — which can be awkward if the house is involved. We can talk you through what applies in your case, and then make sure your own Will is written so your children never have to go through the same uncertainty. It is often a simpler and calmer job than people fear.

How much do Wills and LPAs cost in Arnold?

We work to fixed, transparent fees agreed with you before any work begins, and the first consultation in Arnold is always free. Lasting Powers of Attorney also carry a separate government registration fee of £92 per document, paid to the Office of the Public Guardian — we explain exactly what you'll pay and to whom before you commit to anything.
